The Inti Raymi is an ancient Inca festival that honors the Sun God, Inti. It was the most important religious ceremony of the Inca Empire, celebrated during the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere (around June 24).
The festival took place in Cusco, the capital of the empire. During the ceremony, the Sapa Inca (the emperor) led rituals, offerings, traditional dances, music, and sometimes animal sacrifices to ensure a good harvest and the well-being of the people.
After the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, Inti Raymi was banned because it was considered a pagan celebration. However, in 1944, the festival was revived as a historical reenactment. Today, it is celebrated every year in Cusco and has become an important cultural event and tourist attraction in PerĂº.
