The measure was confirmed this Wednesday, August 26, by the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) of Cusco, which stated that the evaluation aims to guarantee the safety and well-being of visitors and users before authorizing tourist traffic again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Representatives and specialists from the DDC, along with personnel from the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp), are continuing the rehabilitation work on the roads affected by landslides caused by the rains in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trails were closed on Tuesday, August 18, as a preventative measure following heavy rains, mudslides, and flash floods on August 17 and 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since then, technical assessments, rehabilitation, cleanup, and restoration of tourist infrastructure damaged by the natural events have been underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The goal is to restore the necessary safety and accessibility conditions to allow visitors to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reopening was initially announced for Saturday, August 22. However, due to the conditions found during the assessments and rehabilitation work, the date was subsequently postponed to Wednesday, August 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Cusco Regional Directorate of Culture (DDC), a technical inspection of the affected routes will take place between Thursday, August 27, and Sunday, August 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The evaluation will include representatives from the Regional Office of Disaster Risk Management and Security of the Cusco Regional Government, the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci), the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernamp), and the Regional Directorate of Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The objective is to verify the safety and accessibility of the routes, as well as identify any remaining risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities stated that, once the inspection is completed and based on the specialists’ report, the reopening date for routes 1, 2, and 3 of the Inca Trail Network to Machu Picchu will be determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For now, there is no confirmed date for the resumption of tourist access to these three trails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While assessment and rehabilitation work is underway, visitors have an alternative way to access the Inca Trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Route 5 remains open and allows access from Chachabamba, via kilometers 104 and 106 of the railway line that connects Ollantaytambo with Machu Picchu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
